M ATERIALS... J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 9 balls of White or Ecru, or 11 balls of any color. Milward's steel crochet hook No.9 or 10. lyd. heavy linen, 36 inches wide. GAUGE: Each motif measures 4 inches square. When completed, luncheon cloth measures about 48 inches square.

MOTIF... Starting at center, ch 8, joinwith sl st to form ring. Istrnd: 12scinring. Join withsl st.

2nd rnd: Scin same place as slst,*ch5scinnextsc. Repeat from *

around, ending with sl st in Ist sc made (12 loops). 3rd rnd: Sl st across to 3rd st of Ist ch-5 loop, *ch5,scin next loop. Repeat from * around, join.

4thrnd: Make5sc in each loop around. Join.

5thrnd: Slstineach of Ist 3sc of next 5-s c group, ch 5 (to count as dtr); *d trbetween this and following 5-sc group, holding back last loop on hook; dtrin 3rdsc of next 5-s c group, holding back last loop on hook; thread over and draw through allloops on hook; ch5, in 3rdsc of next 5-s c group make 3 dtrwith ch-4 between; ch5, dtrin 3rdsc of next 5-s c group, holding back last loop on hook. 9th and 10th rnds: Scineach st around, making half dc, dc, half dcin corner dc's. Fasten and break off. This completes one motif Make 84 motifs.

Cut linen 33 inches square, and make a %-inch hem all around. Sew a strip of 2x 8 motifs to one side (joining motifs together with neat over-and- over stitches on wrong side). Sew a similar strip to opposite side. Then sew astrip of 2x 12 motifs to third side, joining last 2 motifs on each side to previous strips. Finish last side in same way. Join 4 motifs to form a square, pin to center of linen, and baste in place. Cut away excess linen, and hem neatly.
