Starting at top, ch 253 (to measure about 15 inches).

Sc in 3rd ch from hook (1 p made), ch 4, sc in 3rd ch from hook (another p made), ch 1, sc in 10th ch of foundation (counting back from 1st p made), ch 4, * make a p, ch 4, make another p, ch 1, skip 4 ch of foundation, sc in next ch, ch 4. Repeat from * across (49 loops). Ch 5, turn.

* Make a p as before, ch 4, make another p, ch 1, sc in next loop between 2 p's of previous row. Ch 4, repeat from * across. Ch 5, turn.

Hereafter, repeat 2nd row until piece measures 9 inches in all. On next row, work in pattern across 1st 7 loops. Ch 5, turn. Work over these 7 loops only until piece measures 11 inches. Break off. ** Skip 7 loops, attach thread to next loop and work across next 7 loops for 4 more inches. Break off. Repeat from ** once more. Skip 7 loops and work across remaining 7 loops for 2 inches. Break off.

Starting at center, ch 10, join with sl st to form ring.

16 sc in ring. Join.

Sc in each of 2 sc, ch 9, * skip 2 sc, sc in each of next 2 sc, ch 9. Repeat from * around. Join last ch-9 with sl st to 1st sc.

Ch 5, * dc in ch-9 loop, ch 5, sc between next 2 sc, ch 5. Repeat from * around. Join last ch-5 with sl st.

* 7 sc and 1 half dc in ch-5 loop, dc in dc, 1 half dc and 7 sc in next loop. Repeat from * around. Join. Break off.

Make 69 more motifs. Place motifs all around edges of chair back and sew together on wrong side. Then sew to edges of chair back (see illustration).

Starting at top, ch 113 (to measure about 7 inches) and work as for chair back until piece measures 8 inches (21 loops). On next row work across 1st 7 loops, ch 5, turn. Work over these 7 loops only for 2 more inches. Break off. Skip 7 loops and work over remaining 7 loops for 2 more inches. Break off. Work edging as for chair back, having 37 motifs for each arm piece.
