Ivory Ring Mats Patterns #404 & #405

Attractive mats for a variety of uses in the home are made by crocheting designs around ivory rings, and joining the motifs in different ways. They are popularly used for hot dish mats and are also favored for table scarf ends, luncheon sets or decorative doilies. Choose a thread that is best for the use for which the mat is intended. Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Mercerized Crochet in sizes 5, 10 and 20 are very practical, and equally attractive mats are made of J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, or Crochet Cord, Clark's O.N.T. Cronita or Knitting and Crochet Cotton, and Pearl Cotton, size 5.

The most popular size of ivory ring is ¾ inch or 1 inch in diameter. If rings are not available, wrap the thread around the thumb about 14 times, slip off and use as a ring.

Tie thread over ring and then make 48 sc over ring. Join.

Ch 5 (to count as 1 d tr), 1 dtr in each of next 3 sc, ch 4, * dtr in each of next 4 sc, ch 4, and repeat from *. Join with sl st to 5th ch of ch 5.

* Sc in center of 4 dtr group, 8 dc in ch-4 loop, and repeat from *. Join and fasten off thread. Cover other 12 rings in same way, then sew two shells of each ring to two shells of the joining ring, as illustrated.

Materials required and directions are the same as for the Hexagonal Set, except that dc are made instead of dtr. There should be ch-3 between each group of dc, and 6 dc to form the shell edge.

Directions and materials required the same as for the Oblong Set, but the rings are joined together to form a diamond.

Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Mercerized Crochet Size 30, White or desired color; or any of the threads suggested above. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 5. ¾-inch ivory rings.

Attach thread over ring and make 51 sc (number must be divisible by 3) over ring. Join.

Ch 3 (to count as dc), dc in same st from which ch-3 started, * ch 3, skip 2 sc, 2-dc cluster in next sc, and repeat from * around. Ch 3, join to 3rd st of starting ch.

Sl st to ch-3 loop, ch 3 (to count as dc), 4 dc in ch-3 loop, * ch 2, 5 dc in next loop, and repeat from * around. Ch 2, and join to 3rd ch of ch-3.

Ch 3, dc in each of the next 4 dc, retaining last 2 loops on hook and working all off together, * ch 3, sc in ch-2 loop of preceding rnd, ch 3, dc in each of next 5 dc, working them off as a cluster. Repeat from * around. Ch 3, sc in ch-2 loop.

Ch 3, sc under ch-3 of 1st cluster of previous rnd, * ch 3, sc in ch-3 loop, and repeat from * around. Join with sl st. Sew rings together to form doily or luncheon set.
