Hood Materials

Materials

Chadwick's Red Heart Germantown Zephyr, 4 balls (% oz. balls) of Green and 3 balls of White; or Chadwick's Red Heart Afghan Wool, 2 skeins (1 oz. skeins) each of Green and White.

Hood Back

Foundation

Starting at bottom, ch 18 (11 ch sts to 2 inches).

1st row

Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch. Ch 1, turn.

2nd row

Sc in each sc. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row, increasing 1 sc at both ends of every 6th row until there are 27 sc in row—to inc., make 2 sc in 1 sc. Work straight until piece measures 5% inches. Now dec. 1 sc at both ends of every other row until 17 sc remain—to dec., work off 2 sc as 1 sc. Fasten off.

Hood Front

Ch 101.

1st row

Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch. Ch 1, turn.

2nd row

* Sc in front loop of next sc, sc in back loop of next sc. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row for 1 inch. Inc. 1 st at both ends of next row and every 3rd row until there are 106 sc in row. Work straight until piece measures 3 inches. Fasten off.

Next section

Attach yarn to 39th sc from beginning of row and work in pattern across next 28 sc. Ch 1, turn. Next row: Skip 2 sc, work over next 22 sc, work off 2 sc as 1 sc twice. Ch 1, turn. Work as for last row until all sts are worked off. Place foundation chain of front against the 3 top edges of back; join by working White sc through the 2 thicknesses. Holding right side toward you, work a row of Green sc along front edge. Fasten off. With right side facing, work White sc in each Green sc. Fasten off.

Hood Cord And Pompons

Cord

Same as cord on No. 2387 (next column).

Pompons

Using cardboard 1 x 4 inches, place two 6-inch strands across length of cardboard. Wind White around width 100 times. Pick up both ends of 6-inch strands and tie. Slip out cardboard; fasten pompon to hood as in illustration; trim evenly. Run cord in and out lower edge. Trim each end of cord with pompon (wind yarn 200 times around cardboard).

Mittens Materials

Materials

Chadwick's Red Heart Germantown Zephyr, 6 balls (% oz. balls) of Green and 2 balls of White; or Chadwick's Red Heart Afghan Wool, 4 skeins (1 oz. skeins) of Green and 1 skein of White.

Left Hand Back

Foundation

Starting at wrist, with Green ch 21 to measure 3% inches.

1st row

Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch. Ch 1, turn.

2nd row

Sc in each sc. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row for 6 inches. Next row: Dec. 1 st—by working off 1st and 2nd sc together; sc in each sc, dec. last sc. Ch. 1, turn. Repeat the last row until 8 sts remain. Break off.

Left Hand Palm

Foundation

Starting at outer edge, with Green ch 41 to measure about 7% inches.

1st row

Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch (this is wrist). Ch 1, turn.

2nd row

* Sc in front loop of next sc, sc in back loop of next sc. Repeat from * across, making 2 sc in last sc (this is fingertip).

3rd row

2 sc in 1st sc, sc in next sc, * sc in front loop of next sc, sc in back loop of next sc. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn.

4th, 5th and 6th rows

Repeat 2nd, 3rd and 2nd rows, but inc. at fingertip on 4th row only (43 sc). Ch 1, turn.

7th row

Work across 1st 33 sc, sl st in next sc. Ch 1, turn.

8th row

Work in pattern across. Ch 1, turn.

9th row

Work across 1st 24 sc, ch 17 to start thumb, turn.

10th row

Sc in 3rd ch from hook, sc in 14 ch, work in pattern across (39 sc). Ch 1, turn.

11th row

Work in pattern, increasing in last st. Ch 1, turn.

12th row

Work across 1st 38 sc. Ch 1, turn.

13th row

Work across, decreasing the last st. Break off.

Now work as follows:

Thumb side 1st row

Attach Green to 10th sc from wrist and work in pattern to wrist edge. Ch 1, turn.

Thumb side 2nd row

Work across 1st 19 sc, ch 18 to start other side of thumb, turn.

Thumb side 3rd row

Sc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch; continue in pattern across. Ch 1, turn.

Thumb side 4th row

Work in pattern, increasing in last sc. Ch 1, turn.

Thumb side 5th, 6th and 7th rows

Work in pattern, decreasing last sc on 7th row. Fasten off.

Mittens Joining And Cuff

Joining

Lay one piece over other so that back and palm correspond. Join pieces with a row of White sc through both thicknesses, around sides of hand and around fingers. Join thumb in same way.

Cuff

With double-pointed needles and Green, pick up 46 sts around wrist and work 1 inch in rnds of k1, p1 ribbing. Break off. Work 1 inch in White; then 1 inch in Green. Bind off.

Right hand

Work to correspond with left hand.

Pompons

Make 2 pompons as for hood, and attach one to back of each mitten.

Scarf Materials

Materials

Chadwick's Red Heart Germantown Zephyr, 9 balls (% oz. balls) of Green and 2 balls of White; or Chadwick's Red Heart Afghan Wool, 5 skeins (1 oz. skeins) of Green and 1 skein of White.

Scarf

Foundation

Starting at short end, ch 44 (11 sts to 2 inches).

1st row

Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch. Ch 1, turn.

2nd row

Sc in each sc. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row for 22 inches. Fasten off. Work 2 rows White. Fasten off. Attach Green and work as follows:

1st row

* Sc in front loop of next sc, sc in back loop of next sc. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat this row for 6% inches. Fasten off. Attach White at opposite end and work other border.

Pompons

Make 3 pompons as for hood. Attach a pompon to each corner of one end of scarf, and one at center of other end.
