PLACE MAT (Make 4)-Motif (Make 10)

Starting at Center, ch 5. Join with sl st to form ring.

1st rnd: 8 sc in ring. Join to first sc.

2nd rnd: Ch 8, * dc in next sc, ch 5. Repeat from * around. Join to 3rd ch of ch-8 (8 sps).

3rd rnd: Make 6 sc in each sp around. Join.

4th rnd: Ch 10, * skip 2 sc, sl st in next sc, ch 6, skip 2 sc, tr in next sc, ch 6. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 6. Join to 4th ch of ch-10.

5th rnd: Make 7 sc in next ch-6 loop, * sl st in next sl st, 7 sc in each of next 2 loops. Repeat from * around. Join.

6th rnd: Sc in same place as sl st, * ch 10, sc in sc above next tr. Repeat from * around. Join.

POINTS ... 1st row: Sc in each of next 10 ch. Ch 1, turn.

2nd row: Dec 1 sc-to dec 1 sc, work off 2 sc as 1 sc-sc in next 6 sc, dec 1 sc (8 sc on row). Ch 1, turn.

3rd row: Sc in each sc across (8 sc). Ch 1, turn.

4th row: Dec 1 sc, sc in each sc across, decreasing 1 sc at end of row. Ch 1, turn.

5th row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 4th and 5th rows until all sc's are worked off. Break off. Attach thread to first ch of next loop, sc in same place and in each ch across loop. Complete point as for previous point. Make 6 more points the same way. Do not break off at end of last point. Ch 1, turn. Right side is now facing.

Now work around points as follows: 1st rnd: In tip of first point make sc, ch 3 and sc (picot); * make 9 sc along side of same point, sl st in sc at base of point, 9 sc along side of next point, make picot in tip. Repeat from * around. Join to first sc.

2nd rnd: Sc in picot, * ch 6, skip next 4 sc, dc in next sc, ch 6, dc at base of point, ch 6, skip 5 sc on next point, dc in next sc, ch 6, sc in tip of point, ch 6, skip next 4 sc, dc in next sc, ch 3, dtr at base of point, ch 3, skip 5 sc on next point, dc in next sc, ch 6, sc in tip of point. Repeat from * around. Join.

3rd rnd: Sc in same place as sl st, * 3 sc in next loop, ch 8, skip next dc, dc in next dc, ch 8, skip next loop, make 3 sc in next loop, sc in next sc, 3 sc in next loop, ch 4, skip next dc, make 5 dtr in next dtr, ch 4, make 3 sc in next ch-6 loop, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around. Join.

4th rnd: In same place as sl st make a picot, * ch 11, dc in next dc, ch 11, skip next 3 sc, make a picot in next sc, ch 11, holding back on hook the last loop of each dtr, make a dtr in each of next 5 dtr, thread over and draw through all loops on hook (cluster made); ch 1, make a picot in tip of cluster, ch 11, skip next 3 sc, picot in next sc. Repeat from * around. Join and break off.

Place 4 motifs in diamond position adjacent to each other and sew points neatly together. Join 4 more motifs in the same way. Place another motif between the two end motifs of the first two pieces and sew points together. Finish other side to correspond. Place over a piece of linen and baste in place. Sew motifs to linen. Cut away linen from back of motifs (allowing for hem) and make a narrow hem on wrong side. Press.

APRON ... Join 8 motifs same as for Place Mat. Cut linen 1/2 inch longer than width of motifs and 15 inches deep. Make a rolled hem across 2 short sides. Place motifs across lower edge and finish as for Place Mat. Gather top edge to measure 14 inches. With remaining material make waistband and ties and sew in place.
