A filet crochet tea-cloth lace made in four charted pieces with scallops, lacets, and bars, then sewn around a hemmed fabric center. Originally published in Spool Cotton #202, Crochet for Tables.

Note

Lace is made in four individual pieces. Chart given is for one piece.

First Scallop

Foundation

Starting at the bottom, ch 24.

1st row

Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across (22 sts, counting the turning ch). Ch 3, turn.

2nd row

Dc in next 6 dc (2 bls made), ch 2, skip 2 dc, dc in next dc (sp made over bl), ch 3, skip 2 dc, sc in next dc, ch 3, skip 2 dc, dc in next dc (lacet made). Make 1 sp, then work dc in next 2 dc. Make a foundation dc in top of turning ch as follows: Thread over, insert hook in ch and pull loop through, thread over and draw through 1 loop on hook—ch st made to be used as a foundation st for next dc; (thread over and draw through 2 loops) twice—foundation dc completed. * Thread over, insert hook in specified ch st and complete another foundation dc as before. Repeat from * 7 more times; then thread over, insert hook in ch at base of last foundation dc made and make 1 dc in usual way (3 bls increased at end of row). Ch 8, turn.

3rd row

Dc in 4th ch from hook and in next 4 ch, dc in next 4 dc (2 bls increased at beginning of row). Ch 5, skip 5 dc, dc in next dc (bar made), ch 3, skip 2 dc, sc in next dc, ch 3, dc in next dc (another lacet made). Ch 5, dc in next dc (bar made over lacet). Work 1 sp, 2 bls, then ch 3, turn.

4th row

Dc in next 6 dc, 2 dc in next sp, dc in next dc (bl made over sp), 2 dc over next bar, dc in 3rd st of same bar, ch 2, dc in next dc (bl and sp made over bar). Work 1 bar, then ch 3, skip 2 ch, sc in next ch, ch 3, dc in next dc (lacet made over bar), ch 5, skip 5 dc, dc in next 3 dc, foundation dc in top of turning ch. Work 2 more foundation dc and 1 dc in usual way (1 bl increased at end of row). Ch 8, turn.

5th to 7th rows

Hereafter follow chart from beginning of 5th row and work to 7th row incl. At the end of 7th row, do not fasten off, but lay this piece aside to be worked later.

Second Scallop

Foundation

Starting at the bottom, ch 45.

1st row

Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across (43 sts, counting the turning ch). Ch 11, turn.

2nd row

Dc in 4th ch from hook and in next 7 ch, dc in next 4 dc (3 bls increased at beginning of row). Work 1 sp, (1 lacet, 1 bar) twice; 1 lacet, 1 sp, dc in next 2 dc, foundation dc in top of turning ch. Work 8 more foundation dc and 1 dc in usual way. Ch 8, turn.

3rd to 7th rows

Hereafter follow chart from beginning of 3rd row and work to 7th row incl. Do not break off, but ch 5, join with sl st to top of turning ch at beginning of 7th row of 1st scallop. Fasten off.

Third Scallop

Foundation thru 7th row

Starting at the bottom, ch 45 and work as before, following chart to 7th row incl. Do not break off, but ch 5, join with sl st to top of turning ch at beginning of 7th row of 2nd scallop. Fasten off.

Joined Piece

Join for 8th row

Now ch 3 with ball of thread which remained attached at end of 7th row of 1st scallop, turn and work as follows:

8th row

2 bls, 1 sp, 1 lacet, 1 bl, 1 sp, (1 lacet, 1 bar) twice; 1 lacet, 1 sp, 1 bl. Work dc in next 5 ch, dc in next dc (2 bls worked over joining ch). Work 1 more bl, 1 sp, (1 lacet, 1 bar) twice; 1 sp, 16 bls, 1 sp, (1 bar, 1 lacet) twice; 1 sp, 1 bl, dc in next 5 ch, 1 bl, 1 sp, 1 lacet, 1 bar, 2 sps, 4 bls, 1 lacet, 1 bar, 7 bls, 1 sp, 4 bls, 1 bar, 1 lacet, 1 bar, 1 bl, inc 1 bl. 9th to 26th rows

Starting with 9th row, follow chart until 26th row is completed. Ch 3 to turn at end of 26th row.

27th row

2 bls, 2 sps, 3 bls, 1 bar, 1 lacet, 1 bar, 1 bl, 1 sp, 1 bar, 2 bls, 1 bar, 1 lacet, (1 sp, 1 bl) twice; 1 bar, 1 lacet, 1 bar, 2 sps, 4 bls, 1 bar, 1 lacet, 1 bar, 1 bl. Ch 3, turn.

28th row

Follow chart. Do not ch to turn at end of 30th row.

Sl st in next 3 sts, ch 3 (1 bl decreased at beginning of row), then work 1 bl, 1 bar, 1 lacet, 10 bls, 1 lacet, 1 bar, 1 sp, 4 bls, 1 bar, 5 bls, 1 sp, 2 bls, 3 sps, 1 bar, 1 lacet, 1 bar, 1 bl. Ch 3, turn.

32nd row to top

Starting with 32nd row, follow chart to top. Fasten off. This completes 1 piece.

Assembly

Pieces

Make 3 more pieces same as this and sew them together with neat over-and-over stitches, being careful to match direction of lacets. In doing this the right and wrong sides of dc rows will not match at seams. Press lace with hot iron through wet cloth.

Fabric center

Cut fabric to fit center of lace, making allowance for a narrow hem. Hem fabric and sew to lace.
