Beaded Cloche Pattern
Vintage beaded cloche hat in heavy rug yarn with star-stitch crown, shaped brim, wooden beads, and optional French-knot embroidery. From Star Book 107, Hats, Bags and Bulky Sweaters.
Materials
- Aluminum crochet hook · Size G or size H
Pattern instructions
Cloche
Ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd st from hook, do not join this or the following rounds. Place a marker at beginning of each round.
2 sc in each sc.
*1 sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat from * all around.
*1 sc in each of the next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat from * all around.
Work 6 more rounds in same manner increasing 1 sc at each of 6 increasing points and having 1 more sc between increasing points in each round (6 increases in each round).
1 sc in each sc increasing 1 sc in round (61 sc), sl st in next st to even round.
Working rather loosely, work same as 10th round of bag but having 31 star sts in round, do not join this or following rounds.
1 sc in loop and 1 sc in eye of each star st (62 sc).
1 sc in each sc.
1 sc in each sc increasing 2 sc evenly spaced, sl st in next st.
Same as 12th round but having 32 star sts in round.
Start Brim: *sc in loop of next star st, sc in eye of same star st, sc in loop of next star st, sc in eye of same star st, 2 sc in loop of next star st (an increase), sc in eye of same Star st, repeat from * all around ending to correspond, sl st in 1st sc.
Work in star stitch pattern same as 12th round until there are 29 star stitch patterns, sc in next sc, 1 sl st in each of the next 13 sc (back of hat), sc in next sc, sc in 2nd st of ch 2.
*1 sc in loop and 1 sc in eye of next star st, 1 sc in loop and 1 sc in eye of next star st, 2 sc in loop of next star st, 1 sc in eye of same star st, 1 sc in loop and 1 sc in eye of next star st, 1 sc in loop of next star st, 2 sc in eye of same Star st, repeat from * across star sts only, ending to correspond, then sl st in next sc, do not work across back of hat, ch 1, turn.
Skip the sl st, 1 sc in each sc working through front loop of sts only, sl st in last sc, do not work across sl sts at back of hat, ch 1, turn.
Working through both loops of sts, skip the sl st and work 1 sc in each sc, sl st in last sc, do not work across back of hat, ch 1, turn. Repeat the last row once, cut yarn.
Finishing
Sew under the last 3 rows of brim.
Sew a bead in eye of each star stitch as illustrated or with Brown, embroider a French knot in eye of each star st.
