Black & White Striped Hat Pattern

Set is worked with a double strand of thread throughout. With White, ch 2, 8 sc in 2nd st from hook, do not join this or the following rounds. Place marker at beginning of each round.

2 sc in each sc.

Working in sc, increase in every other sc.

Work 1 round even.

Same as 3rd round.

Increase in every 3rd sc. Work 1 round even.

Increase in every 4th sc. Work 2 rounds even.

Increase in every 3rd sc. Work 2 rounds even.

Increase in every 4th sc. Work 1 round even.

Increase in every 5th sc. Work 2 rounds even.

Increase in every 20th sc. Work 12 rounds even.

1 sc in each sc, picking up entire st by inserting hook from front to back and to front again, join in 1st sc, cut thread.

With Black, ch 13, 2 dc in 4th st from hook, skip 2 sts of ch, sc in next st, *ch 2, 2 dc in same space (shell), skip 2 sts of ch, sc in next st, repeat from * once, ch 3, turn.

2 dc in same space, sc in ch 2 loop of next shell, ch 2, 2 dc in same space, sc in ch 2 loop of next shell, ch 2, 2 dc in same space, insert hook in ch 2 loop of next shell, pull loop through, drop Black, pick up White and complete the sc, ch 3, turn.

2 dc in same space, sc in loop of next shell, * ch 2, 2 dc in same space, sc in loop of next shell, repeat from * once, ch 3, turn.

Continue working in shell st pattern having 3 shells in each row working 1 more row White, drop White (when changing color always complete last half of st with next color), * 2 rows Black, 2 rows White, repeat from * 19 times or until piece is long enough to go around lower edge of hat, cut thread.

Sew long sides together filling slightly to form a roll. Sew 2 short ends together. Sew to lower edge of hat as illustrated. Run hat wire through about a 22 inch length of velvet tubing, fold to form a bow.

With White, ch 23, sl st in 2nd st from hook, 1 sl st in each remaining st of ch, cut thread. Wrap twice around center of bow and sew bow to hat as illustrated.
